What happened to Republic Avenue?

On July 17, 1948, Quezon City was declared the new capital city of the Philippines. Then president Elpidio Quirino signed Republic Act No. 333 establishing the permanent seat of the national government to Quezon City moving it from Manila.

Republic avenue was supposed to serve as a main road between Barangay Sauyo and Batasan hills.

From air, you can see the outline of what's left of the Republic Avenue.

Spanning about 6 kilometers, you could travel between Commonwealth Avenue and Novaliches bayan for only 8 minutes from today's 30 minutes!

There are plans to revive the Republic Avenue, but informal settlers already occupied its intended path.
